A home office does not need to be a whole room or a big budget. What it needs is a surface at the right height, a chair you can sit in for hours, good light and somewhere to put things away at the end of the day. Here is how to get all of that for under $500.
Where the money should go
- Chair: $120–$200. This is the one piece that affects your body every day.
- Desk: $80–$150. A simple, sturdy desk at least 24 inches deep.
- Lighting: $30–$60 for a good adjustable desk lamp.
- Storage: $40–$80 for a shelf, cart or a couple of boxes.
- Rug, plant and small decor: $40–$80.
Choose the chair first
Look for adjustable seat height, lumbar support and a seat depth that lets you sit back with a little gap behind your knees. Armrests that drop low enough to slide under the desk save space. If your budget is tight, spend more here and less on the desk — a plain desk with a good chair beats the reverse every time.
Set the right heights
- Desk height: most adults are comfortable at 28 to 30 inches.
- Elbows: roughly at 90 degrees, with shoulders relaxed when typing.
- Screen: the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level, about an arm's length away. A laptop stand and a separate keyboard make a big difference.
Fit it into a small space
No spare room? Common spots that work well include a bedroom corner, the end of a living room, a wide hallway nook or even a closet with the doors removed. Wall-mounted shelves above the desk use vertical space, and a rolling cart can be pushed away when the workday ends. If you are using a shared room, a small rug under the desk visually marks the "office" zone.
Get the light right
Place the desk so daylight comes from the side rather than straight behind the screen (glare) or behind you (shadows and reflections). Add an adjustable desk lamp with a neutral-to-warm bulb for evenings. A dim room makes long days feel longer.
Storage that keeps the desk clear
The fastest way to feel productive is a clear desk. Give every cable, notebook and charger a home: a cable tray under the desk, one drawer unit or cart, and a shelf or pegboard for things you use daily.
Make it pleasant
A plant, a framed print and a comfortable rug make a work corner somewhere you want to sit. Keep decor to a few pieces so video calls look calm too — what is behind you matters.
Garage or basement office?
If your office is in a garage or basement, plan for temperature. A small heater for winter and a fan for summer often decide whether you will actually use the space. Good overhead light and a rug over concrete floors also make a large difference.
