New cabinets and counters cost thousands, but most of what makes a kitchen feel tired is much cheaper to fix: dated hardware, harsh lighting, clutter on the counters and nothing soft to look at. With about $300 you can change all of those in a weekend.

Swap the hardware

Cabinet knobs and pulls are the jewellery of a kitchen. Replacing them is one of the highest-impact changes per dollar. Matte black looks modern, brushed brass feels warm, and simple wood knobs suit Japandi and farmhouse styles. Count your doors and drawers first, and measure the hole spacing on existing pulls so new ones fit without drilling. Budget: $40–$90.

Fix the lighting

Most kitchens have one overhead light that leaves the counters in your own shadow. Plug-in or battery LED under-cabinet strips solve that with no electrician. If you have a pendant over an island or table, a new shade or a warmer bulb changes the mood instantly. Budget: $30–$70.

Clear the counters

Clutter makes any kitchen look smaller and older. Keep only what you use every day out — usually the kettle or coffee maker, a utensil crock and a cutting board — and give everything else a home.

  • Drawer organisers and shelf risers inside cabinets: $25–$50
  • A rail or magnetic strip for knives and utensils: $15–$30
  • Matching jars for dry goods: $25–$45

Add something soft

Kitchens are full of hard surfaces. A washable runner rug, new tea towels and a linen café curtain add colour and absorb noise. Choose one or two colours that repeat across them. Budget: $40–$70.

Bring in life

A herb pot on the windowsill, a bowl of lemons or a single trailing plant on top of the cabinets makes a kitchen feel lived-in and fresh. Budget: $15–$30.

Style one shelf or corner

Pick a single spot — an open shelf, the space beside the stove or the top of the fridge — and style it deliberately: a cutting board leaning against the wall, a stack of plates, one cookbook and a small plant. One finished corner makes the whole kitchen feel designed.

Optional: a small corner TV

If you like to watch while you cook, a small TV on a corner wall mount keeps it off the counter and angled toward where you work. Keep it away from the stove and sink, and fit it high enough to stay clear of splashes.

A sample $300 plan

  • New hardware: $70
  • Under-cabinet lights: $50
  • Storage and jars: $70
  • Runner, towels and curtain: $60
  • Plants and styling: $30

That leaves a little room for shipping or a new pendant shade. For more kitchen ideas with complete shopping lists, browse the kitchen designs or try the studio with the budget set to $300.
